Choosing The Right Snow Plow For Your Truck And Situation

Living in an area with a lot of snowfall in the winter can make keeping your driveway clear a lot of work. If you have a large driveway and parking area, you may want to consider adding a snowplow to your truck, but getting the right plow is essential.

Plow Sizes

You will find some standard snowplow sizes at most snow plow dealers, but not every plow is suitable for every truck. Smaller trucks will use smaller plows, but the snowplow sales associate can help you find the right one to fit your truck correctly.

If you want to use a larger snow plow on your truck, it is important to have a snow plow services tech check the suspension to ensure that your truck can deal with the weight and the stress put on the running gear and frame when moving a large amount of snow.

Plow Materials

Commercial snowplows are typically made from steel, but some more recent, lighter composite plows can be used for residential snow removal. The composite plows are lighter weight, but they don't reduce the stress on the frame when pushing snow. Talk to the snowplow sales associate you are working with to see if a composite plow will allow you to use a larger unit on your truck.

If you are using a composite snow plow blade, the cutting edge that contacts the ground is typically made from steel or carbide, so it is durable and keeps the bottom of the snowplow blade from wearing on asphalt and other hard surfaces. There are some hybrid cutting edges available that are lightweight urethane with a steel edge embedded in it that you could use as well.

Special Plow Features

When you are looking at plows for your truck, ask your snowplow sales associate about added features like v-plows that can bend in the middle or adding snow foils to the plow's top and sides to keep as much snow in front of the plow as possible. These added features can make it easier to use the plow and remove the snow from your driveway or parking area.

Along with adding accessories, the mounting system that the plow uses can be essential. The mount can make it easy to connect to the truck, even in the middle of a storm, and easier to attach by yourself. Ask the snowplow sales associate about the various mounting options for the plow you are considering and for your truck make and model.

Once you choose your plow, having it professionally installed is the best option and will ensure your snow plow is ready to go when the snow flies.
